AGE AND BEHAVIOR: SLOW RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION – SPEED OD NERVE CONDUTION - TRANSMISSION TIME STUDY AND RESEARCH
One study was different from these in that both motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities were measured (LaFratta and Canestrari, 1966). This was done with human subjects ranging in age from 23 to 91 years. The wrist (median nerve) was stimulated and action potentials were recorded of the index finger (digital nerve) and the area of the hand below the thumb (abductor pollicis breves muscle). The action potential measurements showed that both sensory conduction time and motor conduction time declined with age, but the decline of the latter was not as great nor as related to age as was the former. Both the sensory and the motor velocities from the wrist to the hand or fingers were very brief—on the order of less than three to just more than five milliseconds. Again, the values are small in relation to voluntary RT which may be of the order 130 to 250 milliseconds or more. Taken together, these studies suggest that peripheral nerve transmission speeds, while perhaps taking longer in the old than in the young, are minor contributions to the total time needed to execute voluntary reactions. Such reactions require translation of the input and association to correct response. *220\220\8*
