AGE AND BEHAVIOR: SLOW RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION - COMPLEX STIMULI AND RESPONSES - A CENTRAL ROLE OF RT
The implication of much of the foregoing is that the slowing of responses with age underlies a great number of cognitive and other important life activities. This is not the typical formulation of most psychologists. Most measure performances in terms of accuracy or of speed, or some combination of these two, and then make inferences regarding the specific function tested. The formulation here—the formulation of several behavioral gerontologists, most notably, perhaps, Birren—is very different. It is radical in suggesting that age-related deficits in cognitive and perceptual abilities are a result of the slowing with age or, at least, share a common antecedent with it. This is implicit in statements such as that made at the beginning of this chapter, "slowness of behavior is the perceptual manifestation of a primary process of aging in the nervous system." If the proposition is that RT or RT-type behavior underlies cognitive and perceptual performance, or that these are controlled by a common, central mechanism, the most direct test of the proposition is to determine correlations between them. This has been done on various occasions, but usually for reasons other than testing the proposition. The results of these tests have been varied; reported correlations ranged from zero to a high in one case of .60. The data, taken as a whole, offer some support, but not a whole lot, for the proposition that RT is important to, or a reflection of, cognitive and perceptual ability in later life. *230\220\8*
