AGE AND BEHAVIOR: SLOW RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION - COMPLEX STIMULI AND RESPONSES - CLUSTERS OF CORRELATIONS - THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF SPEED OF RESPONSE
When the age range of subjects covers young adulthood through old age, the important role of speed of response is more apparent. A study by Botwinick and Storandt (1974b) demonstrated this. A variety of tests were given to men and women across the age range 20 to 79 years. Among these tests were simple pencil-and-paper speed tests and tests of brain function (typically used in the clinic to measure brain integrity). The latter measure perceptual and cognitive abilities. Several principal component analyses were carried out with one of them indicating a factor encompassing age, speed, and brain function. Increased age was associated with decreased speed and decreased scores on these tests. Other analyses showed somewhat different results, but all of them pointed to a central role for speed. It was suggested that speed of response is related to "central intactness," but mainly in regard to the ability to process incoming sequential information quickly (see Botwinick and Storandt, 1974b).
The role of speed in cognitive and perceptual functioning was seen also in other studies. Jalavisto (1965) reported test loadings of a factor analysis based upon 91 men and women aged 40 to 93 years. More than 25 tests were given and among these were RT, tapping speed, memory, abstraction ability, and others. A comparable picture emerged: As age increased, speed decreased as did memory and abstraction ability. Jalavisto labeled this first factor, "Aging, Speed, Memory."
In concluding this section it is well to point out that not all cluster studies suggest an important role for RT. Botwinick and Storandt (1973) correlated RT performances with those on pencil-and-paper speed tests and with two subtests of the WAIS—the Digit Symbol and Vocabulary. A principal component analysis disclosed two factors, one of speed and one of cognition. RT scores, predictably, were high for the Speed factor, but they were near zero for the Cognition factor. It was essentially the same for the pencil-and-paper speed tests.
Overall, then, the factor analytic studies tend to point to an important role for RT and speed performances, but not all studies do.
