The clustering of correlation coefficients—principal component or factor analysis—highlights a more important role for speed of response.
A comprehensive factor analysis involving RT and pencil-and-paper speed tests was carried out by Birren, Botwinick, Weiss, and Morrison (1963). They gave 32 tests to elderly people, most of the tests being of sensation-perception and cognition, with 11 of the latter represented by the subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). Not only was RT relatively independent of the perceptual and cognitive performances, but it was also not correlated highly with performances on the pencil-and-paper speed tests thought to involve essentially the same type of function.
Despite this, when the data were analyzed by principal components, a fourth factor was disclosed, where RT was represented with a loading of .40, and a non-verbal, non-speed test of intelligence (Raven Progressive Matrices, Raven, 1938) was represented with a loading of .30. This means that this component, involving many measurements each contributing small amounts to the total, was about as much a component of intelligence as it was of RT. While these loadings are small, i.e., .40 and .30, only one other of the 32 variables contributed more.
