AGE AND BEHAVIOR: SLOW RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION – CENTRAL MECHANISMS - SYNAPTIC DELAY IN THE SPINAL CORD
"It seems reasonable that because of aging there might be a general slowing of integrative processes in the central nervous system due to prolonged excitation of synapses." With this in mind, Wayner and Emmers (1958) compared young and aged rats in the delay in transmission of a monosynaptic reflex through the spinal cord. They found that it took longer for impulses to be transmitted across this simple synapse in old rats than in young ones. With hooded rats categorized within five age groups, from 117 days to 822 days, the synaptic delays rose systematically from 0.97 to 1.86 milliseconds.
These transmission times are miniscule compared to total RT, and Wayner and Emmers concluded that additional information is necessary to relate them to it. It has been suggested by some that if the results of Wayner and Emmers are representative of the very many synapses in the central nervous system, and if changes with age in the delays across all the synapses are summative, this could account for much of the slowing with age in total RT.
