AGE AND BEHAVIOR: PROCESSING SENSE INFORMATION - COMPENSATORY ADJUSTMENTS

When in later life there is decrease in sensory acuity and in the adequacy of perceptual processing of information, there are compensatory adjustments that are possible. Some of these appear as changes in personality characteristics and, as already indicated, often take the form of a cautiousness, discussed in earlier chapters. There are other types of adjustments that are also possible and these, unfortunately, have hardly been studied at all. It is here, perhaps more than in other areas, where good work can be very important both for basic science and for helping people.
For the hard of hearing, for example, the prescription is slow speech, louder speech and, very important, close attention to the person talking. As important—and in many cases more important—the prescription is to watch the lips of the person talking. This provides an additional, and sometimes crucial, source of information, corroborating and supplementing the main information source, and when necessary, supplanting it.
Bisensory compensatory adjustments sometimes are automatically made, often without an awareness. A famous neurologist, for example, once described his observation that young people tend to drink water from a glass without any apparent visual attention to the glass. The kinesthetic and proprioceptive cues are sufficient to carry out the drinking. However, some older people, particularly the impaired aged, tend to monitor their drinking by a close, visual watch.
A more experimental analysis of the relative benefit for older people of looking at what they are doing was made by Szafran (1951). He had industrial workers of widely varying ages locate targets with a pointer under two conditions: (1) when direct vision was permitted; and (2) when the use of goggles made it possible to see the general display but not the targets or pointers. Szafran reported that when unable to make use of vision the older workers had great difficulty. They tended to make postural adjustments, turning their heads and often their bodies in the direction of the particular target to be located. Without the maximum sensory opportunities, the old fared poorly indeed; they were at a special disadvantage.
